When will football conquer racism?
When I was growing up playing football in the park, I was naïve, like many children, and had absolutely no idea that all around the world at that time, racism was being hurled around almost daily. What I loved was the game, so on my fourteenth birthday, when we were playing and a boy I didn’t know too well shouted a racist remark at a friend of mine, I was shocked. First I was shocked because I had never heard this word before, and then I was shocked when I found out what it meant. It didn’t ruin my birthday but it certainly got me thinking about things in a big way…
Racism isn’t anywhere near as bad as it was a decade or two decades ago…
By the Lockers these days, professional players must talk about all kinds of things. And judging by the recent events in world football – namely the Suarez and the Terry saga, which now sees him strips of his Captain title – racism has to be up there. Which leads us to the all-important question: just when will football conquer this elephant in the room?
I’d like to say “soon”, but somehow I find that unlikely – which is depressing. Even though it was only a minor comment, at a recent game – at the Emirates – I heard the N word being bandied around just behind me for what seemed like a trivial joke. I guess one issue is that if fans see the top players being racist – or seeming to be racist – then they think they can do the same. Or maybe it’s simpler than that. Maybe it’s just because football is so big now, and any large number of people will always attract a minority of people who would be better off staying at home.
Still, it isn’t all doom and gloom. Racism isn’t anywhere near as bad as it was a decade or two decades ago, and that’s a fact. I say let us keep going and stamp it out one day once and for all. It may take a while but once it’s gone, hopefully we’ll have gone far enough that we won’t be able to even think about turning back.
