Is the MLS a masters league?

December 14th, 2011

If you have not followed the MLS before then you may be surprised to see exactly who has been playing in the American top flight. I have never been too interested in the league before, but one of my friends is a football buff, and is always coming out with random and interesting facts and figures. We were talking about old players that we used to love watching, and I was surprised to hear him say how many of them ended up playing in the MLS at the end of their careers.

The most famous of these players is obviously David Beckham, who was tempted to join the LA Galaxy quite a few years back now, and gave a huge boost to interest in the league, and increasd sponsorship deals and advertising contracts for both the team and the league. I could not believe it when I heard that the Arsenal legend Thierry Henry is now kicking about with the New York Red Bulls! Angel is playing over there now, as well as another Arsenal legend Ljunberg.

The question is, do these players go to the MLS in order to play a high level of footbal and have a new challenge in their careers, or just to pick up a big wage packet before they finish playing or they end up sitting on the bench for a championship team? It is the best thing for the MLS clubs, but is it the best thing for the players?

Well that is down to the players to decide, and the reports back from them always seem to be positive. One thing is for sure, it does extend the amount of playing time they get in a top flight league. Robert Pires is still playing at 37 years old, and if he was still in Europe, he would probably be working in business as one of the red diesel suppliers and not playing football any longer, as the clubs would have lost interest in him.
